Thai Textile Industries Provides Brands with a Supply Chain that’s Vertical and Sustainable

When brands want high quality, fine count yarns to go to Thai Textile Industries.  The company focuses on compact yarns in 50, 60 and 70 counts.

“While other companies are doing carded combed yarn, we are doing 100 percent compact yarn,” said Kumjorn Chuenchoochit.   Compact yarns have higher evenness values than carded yarns.

“In addition to our spinning mill we also do weaving, dyeing, printing, finishing and garment manufacturing.  About 80 percent of our yarn goes into our fabrics. We offer our customers a one-stop shop, which has been important recently when logistics have not been very reliable,” he said.

By having their entire supply chain in one country, Thai Textile Industry Public Company Limited helps buyers to save on shipping costs and shorten lead times. The reduced transportation also helps them cut back on their total carbon footprint.

“Our customers want yarns and fabrics that are sustainable, but they need newness so that they have a story to tell.”

Keeping Things Fresh and New

Even at the higher end of the market, it is still very competitive so Thai Textile Industries has been developing some innovative products including cotton blended with bamboo, silk, hemp and some sustainable synthetic fibers.

“Our customers want yarns and fabrics that are sustainable, but they need newness so that they have a story to tell,” he added.

Still, the foundation of their yarn is cotton, and so Thai Textile Industries invests in buying the best quality it can find.

“When we buy US cotton  we can be sure that it is almost contamination free. The quality is consistent in terms of the strength, the length, the micron and so on. Although the initial price of US cotton may be slightly higher than other cotton, we are able to reduce waste during the production process. So in the end, we actually save money by using US cotton.

“The quality of the final product is better, we have less wastage and our production is more stable,” said Mr. Chuenchoochit.

Trust and Transparency

“Nowadays, most people are very concerned about environmental issues. They’re also really concerned about how our natural resources are being used.  With the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol® (the Trust Protocol) we are assured that the raw materials or the product we are dealing with are sustainable, because the program concentrates on how water, energy, and land are being used. They are also concentrating on soil loss, and how to improve the soil.

And they are monitoring greenhouse gas emissions. All these are now big topics, not only for us, but for our customers.  Lots of our customers want us to report to them as to how we are helping the environment.  It is becoming one of the key issues when they consider what to buy,” he said.

“The Trust Protocol is a great way for us to show our customers that we are really concerned about where our materials are coming from.”

Creating Future Success

“We have to be really innovative, as well as more cost efficient. We are always looking to develop new products. At the same time we are looking for new machinery that can improve both our quality and help us reduce costs.

“The market is really competitive and customers have a lot of choices.  So we really need to stand by providing them with all of these services,” said Mr. Chuenchoochit.

Certified Sustainable

The Trust Protocol is aligned with existing sustainability programs including the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. It brings quantifiable and verifiable goals and measurement to sustainable cotton production, and drives continuous improvement in six key sustainability metrics – land use, soil carbon, water management, soil loss, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy efficiency. The Trust Protocol is designed from the ground up to address the unique regulatory and larger farm growing environment in the United States.

How the Trust Protocol Works

The Protocol Consumption Management Solution (PCMS) starts at the gin when the participating producer’s cotton is ginned and each unique Permanent Bale Identification number (PBI) is attached. At this point we know the exact gin weight and can create an exact amount of Protocol Cotton Consumption Units, where one Protocol Cotton Consumption Unit is created for each kilogram of Protocol Verified Cotton. This important step provides absolute authentication of U.S. cotton origin, verifying against the USDA database.

Supply Chain Transparency

The PCMS harnesses blockchain technology through a powerful combination of the Trust Protocol platform and TextileGenesis™ system to deliver full supply chain transparency by recording and verifying the movement of U.S. cotton along the entire supply chain.  This creates article-specific transparency for finished products that was not previously accessible to brands and retailers.

Trusted Third Party Certification

The Trust Protocol incorporates a comprehensive program of verification against Trust Protocol benchmarks, in the form of both second-party and independent third-party audits of grower performance through Control Union Certifications—the latter through allocated on-site visits.

Control Union Certifications has certified over 150 industry standards programs worldwide, including working as a key partner in the early development and piloting phases of Impact Claim Verification Protocol.
