Shanghai is preparing to ease its lockdown with some factories starting production under a closed-loop system.

Economists at Nomura now think 45 cities and 373 million people are under some kind of lockdown in China.

The number of ships waiting to enter Shanghai and Ningbo has reduced over the course of last week as carriers are omitting Shanghai calls due to the drop in export cargo volumes, according to Lineranalytica.

  • However analysts are warning of potential logjams – in Shanghai and at US and European ports – as exports surge as lockdowns are lifted.

Trucking operations in key coastal cities in China are coming under increasing pressure amid a surge of new Covid-19 cases in places as diverse as Dalian, Tianjin, Shanghai, Ningbo, Xiamen and Dongguan, according to UPS. All are classified as ‘medium- or high-risk areas’.

  • No cargo will be accepted at all if drivers have been to medium- or high-risk areas within the last 14 days or the factory is located in medium- or high-risk areas.

Ocean carriers continue to welcome bookings for cargo originating from Southeast Asia due to current constraints and dips in shipment activity ex-China, per Flexport.

For May, carriers have already announced blank sailings on Trans-Pacific Eastbound lane (TPEB) and on lanes sailing to Europe out of China, said UPS.
