Ikea (Sweden) is known for its massive standalone retail stores. The size gives the retail the space to create appealing dioramas and ‘vingettes’ of bedrooms, livingrooms, offices and so forth to showcase its products.
The furniture and home textiles retailer is now testing smaller formats, to compliment its larger stores.
Ikea‘s first smaller scale store in Southeast Asia will be a 6,500 sqm three-story shop in Singapore’s Jem Mall. It will serve as an anchor tenant, filling the space that department store Robinsons recently vacated.
Being located in a mall will enable Ikea to reach more customers.
Increasingly retailers around the world are experimenting with innovative ways to use smaller spaces.
