From the initial sounds of things, it’s a good deal, at least from an apparel point of view. The big win: No tariffs, no quotas for trade between the UK and EU. This is critical considering that the both are each other’s biggest trading partners in many sectors - not just for finished goods, but also for raw materials. Potential Sticking Point: The deal still needs to be ratified by all 27 EU nations. While most are likely to vote in favor of the deal, it is possible that some might not vote ‘yes’. Realistically, both sides had way too much to lose by parting on hostile terms. In the short term, logistics at border crossings are likely to be delayed as Customs wrestles with checking passports for truck drivers and changes in paperwork. There are other changes, but none that drastically impact the apparel sector.
New Trade Deals for a New Era
As the dust finally settles on Brexit, the UK is now rapidly looking to establish new trade deals to replace the trading terms that were set in place by the EU. As of December 29, 2020, the UK has secured 33 trade agreements with 90 countries, most recently with Japan. Of these, 29 are trade continuity agreements. Other negotiations are in progress, notably to join the CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership). However, major deals, like with the U.S. and China, have yet to be tackled. Those could be potentially trickier. Until specific trade deals are made, most apparel imports into the UK from China would have a 12% tariff. This compares with tariffs of 0%-9.6% on apparel imports (depending on the category) from Vietnam (based on a trade agreement that is expected to come into effect as of January 1, 2021). Overall, from a trade point of view, trade between the UK and most nations or blocs will remain the same in 2021 and beyond.
