Amazon Could Face Anti-trust Charges in the EU

Amazon (USA) is facing anti-trust allegations in the EU for its treatment of third-party sellers.

Specifically, there are claims that Amazon uses data gathered from sales by third-party sellers on its platform to develop Amazon house brand products, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

One area of conflict of interest is that Amazon is both a seller and a platform.

The issue, according to European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, is whether Amazon is using data from the merchants it hosts on its site to secure an advantage in selling products against those same retailers, reported CNBC.

“These are very early days and we haven’t formally opened a case. We are trying to make sure that we get the full picture,” Ms. Vestager said during a news conference earlier this week.

Amazon has also faced anti-trust actions in the U.S. spearheaded by President Donald Trump.
