SOURCING SPECTRUM | LAOS
An Overlooked Sourcing Opportunity
Laos is unlikely to become the next Vietnam or Cambodia. Its apparel industry is too small, its labor pool too limited and its supply chain too dependent on imported materials to compete as a major sourcing hub.
However, for buyers willing to look beyond the traditional high-volume sourcing model, Laos offers some interesting opportunities.
The country has established capabilities in woven apparel and specialist workwear, a willingness among some factories to accept smaller orders and favorable access to two important export markets. Recent changes to U.S. tariffs have also improved its relative competitive position.
The opportunity is therefore not to shift large sourcing programs into Laos. It is to use the country as a specialist second source, particularly for stable, repeatable products supported by a regional supply chain.
