Crystal Denim, the denim division of Crystal International Group Ltd., is unveiling a sneak peek of its sustainable acts – including the launch of its first-ever carbon footprint calculator and collaborations with other industry peers along the supply chain. Crystal Denim has ambitious goals of innovating 100% sustainable materials, working on different closed-loop and upcycling projects for fashion circularity, expanding digitalisation along its 3D virtual journey, enhancing low-carbon initiatives in manufacturing facilities, and driving greener washing and finishing processes.
All initiatives tie-in to one important belief: It is possible to make zero environmental impact jeans for the world and create a greener fashion future.
“We are dedicated to design and produce zero-carbon jeans, the first step we need to do is to put our manufacturing processes in measurement, identify and evaluate the environmental impact, and visualise it with a transparent principle.”
Miles Lam, Assistant General Manager of Product Development of Crystal Denim
Crystal International is always leading sustainable development in the garment manufacturing industry and Crystal Denim is stepping up its sustainable journey and strategies. Thanks to their comprehensive understanding of the sustainability needs of the denim community, Crystal Denim is committed to taking multiple actions to lower the environmental impact from a manufacturing perspective, with a specific focus on the reduction of carbon emissions.
Several phases with a multi-pronged approach will be taken to escalate the development of sustainable denim. Crystal Denim is running a beta test of a carbon footprint calculator to track carbon emissions of a single denim product throughout the entire denim manufacturing process, including garment sewing, washing and finishing.
“We are dedicated to design and produce zero-carbon jeans, the first step we need to do is to put our manufacturing processes in measurement, identify and evaluate the environmental impact, and visualise it with a transparent principle,” Mr Miles Lam, Assistant General Manager of Product Development of Crystal Denim said. This tool, serving an educational purpose, is expected to be rolled out in 2022. Emissions from the manufacturing process and emissions from general utilities of manufacturing facilities will be counted in the model in two phases.
It is essential that all industry peers join hands to tackle climate change. Upon launching the carbon footprint calculator, which will be open to public access, Crystal Denim aims to generate public attention for a better understanding of the environmental impact of the production of denim items, as well as a strategy to reduce those impacts through the platform. This will give the public the opportunity to learn more about the entire process of manufacturing denim products.
In addition, Crystal Denim is accelerating responsible action to minimise environmental impact. With the ambition to expand renewable energy as a strategy towards group-wide decarbonisation, the denim factories in Vietnam and Cambodia are planning the installation of solar photovoltaic systems as the sustainable facilities.
