India and the U.S. are discussing a trade deal that could give Indian textiles and apparel either duty-free or reduced duties to the U.S.
After India lost its GSP status in June 2019, tariffs to the U.S. on India textile products rose to 16.5% to 32%.
However, the concessions come as part of a package that requires India to reduce tariffs on imports of various products from the U.S., including medical and pharmaceuticals, dairy and poultry, automobiles, motor bikes and other items.
The deal, should it go through, but would not cover all trade between the two nations. However the small deal is seen as a stepping stone to enhancing bilateral trade.
