Myanmar Factories Face Growing Calls for Strikes

Myanmar protests face a growing call for workers to strike.

Myanmar’s ambassador to the U.K., Kyaw Zwar Minn, joined the growing diplomatic condemnation of the Feb. 1 coup, calling for the release of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint from detention in the capital, Naypyitaw.

The ambassador, posting on the Embassy’s Facebook page, called for both sides to come to the negotiating table, rather than the growing violence that is spreading through the nation.

Unions are now calling on workers to strike, a further blow to the economy, which is already seeing international buyers pulling out over concerns about human rights violations.

While foreign nations are divided about the pros and cons of placing sanctions on Myanmar, foreign buyers are seeing the nation’s ‘risk factor’ become intolerable and will not likely place orders there – even through other vendors – until the government has been restored to normal.
