Brazil’s retail sales fell 16.8% in April, the largest drop in 20 years, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics.
May sales are expected to show weak recovery.
As in most nations, one of the hardest hit sectors has been apparel and footwear.
Sales of clothes and shoes declined 60.6% in April month-on-month, following a drop of 42.3% in March.
By comparison, sales of furniture and household appliances fell 20.3% in April after declining 26.1% the previous month.
