March Retail Gains Are Not a True Picture

Jumps in March retail sales estimates from many nations are misleadingly optimistic.

The gains were driven by consumers stockpiling everyday essentials from food to toilet paper.  Groceries and similar categories saw on average 22-26% sales increases last month.

The surge is likely to be followed by a reversal in April as these same consumers live off of their stockpiles and don’t need to makes as many purchases.
