Australia Retail Reopens

Australia’s retailers have started reopening stores this week, after a 5-week lockdown.

The reopening is well timed, with Mother’s Day coming on May 10.

Chains such as Cotton On, Rip Curl, Kathmandu, Glasson, Myers and others are reopening all or some of their stores across the nation.

International retailer Apple said it will open stores today (May 7).

Early reports from local media said that people where returning to retail.

“Business has varied amongst shopping centers, but business is up,” according to a 9News report.

The report went on to say that traffic at malls was better than many retailers expected.  Consumer were enthusiastic to retun to mall – even if they were doing more looking than buying.

Although Australia has a strong e-commerce sector, comsumers also like the option of being able to go to a store and try on clothing before buying it.

Retailers have implemented safety measures including hand sanitizer and more frequent cleaning of store fixtures and furnishings, as well as checking the temperatures of customers before they enter the store.
